Prof. Dr. Nasra Hyder Kazi born in the cosmopolitan City of Karachi and raised in the vibrant city of Lahore, she was born to a father who was a police commissioner and mother who was an educationalist. Medicine was not in her blood but in her soul. She graduated from King Edward Medical College in Lahore. For a very short time she was affiliated with Fatima Jinnah Medical College, found her parth as a research scholar and moved to Karachi, where she completed her M.Phil at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center. After completion, she moved to London where her journey of teaching started at the Prestigious Institute of St Bartholomew's Hospital London. She also had the distinction of being the first Asian to be accepted as lecturer at St Bart’s Hospital in London.
Five years after being affiliated with the Institute she returned home with her family. Home was not Karachi nor Lahore from where the couple originally belonged but a city in Sindh called Hyderabad. Hyderabad was destined to be their home for the next 30 years. It will not be unfair to call Liaquat Medical College as her 2nd home, where she not only taught the required curriculum but ensured that her students left with more knowledge than they started with. Professor Nasra Hyder academically had all the makings to be declared as the one who could “profess”, an abject definition of Webster’s definition of the word: “to practice to be versed in a calling or profession”. To teach Anatomy as her profession, she did so admirably, that it became a calling for her. She thus became recognized as a Professor by not only by her credentials but succinctly so by the multitudes she taught and cared for.
She is no longer with us, but what she did for the institution she served and for the students she taught; is a living testament to her high achievements in the social and cultural status of the city of Hyderabad.
